November 2009
Hazelwood Trail Construction Continues
with Eagle Scout Candidates

Eagle Scout Evan B. and volunteers constructed another 250 feet of the Hazelwood Trail in November. The trail features switchbacks which mitigate the slope of the western hill in Hazelwood Park. Below are pictures from Evan's work party which depict the trail before, during, and after construction. Thanks so much to Evan B. and his volunteers for their hard work and a great job! Michael Holly, Newcastle Parks Director, has another Eagle Scout candidate interested in completing another section of the trail. With only 350 feet of trail left to construct, the Hazelwood Trail is almost complete and will be a nice addition to the Newcastle Trail System.

October 2009
Hazelwood Trail
Construction Begins

Eagle Scout Candidates, Nathan and Aaron, completed 300 feet of the eastern section of the Hazelwood Trail.  The Scouts, taking on the challenge of constructing  the proposed trail, cut through downed trees, removed brush, dug roots, moved rocks, transplanted ferns, and leveled or “graded” slopes to make a walkable trail. They successfully completed their projects and earned their Eagle Scout awards, with praises from Michael Holly, Newcastle Parks Director.  The Scouts were responsible for recruiting their volunteers and coordinating their individual work parties.  Youth and adult volunteers supported the Scouts in their projects, as well as Newcastle Trails and Weed Warrior Board Members. Many thanks to the Scouts for their efforts and contribution to the community, and congratulations for completing their successful Eagle Scout projects!
